Guide to Pharmacies and Drugstores in the Costa Del Sol Spain

In Spain, what is known as a pharmacy in the UK, Ireland and mostly anywhere english speaking is referred to as 'farmacia.' Pharmacies are also recognizable by a green flashing cross displayed outside or within the store window. In general, the pharmacies in Spain are reliable. That is, they dispense the proper medications and the drugs themselves are of a Western level of quality. Pharmacies in Spain can be used for all of your prescription and over-the-counter drug needs. Though generally similar to the system in the United States, with prescriptions required for most drugs, there are some that one can buy over-the-counter through a pharmacist. An example is an antibiotic. Similar to the United States, pharmacists cannot distribute prescription medications without authorization from a doctor. However, many drugs that require a prescription are available without prescription in Spain. It should be noted that the relative selection of medications for discomfort needs is smaller than that in most English speaking countries. While prescription medications are only available at pharmacies, some medications for discomfort needs can be found in a variety of places such as supermarkets. Not all pharmacies are open 24 hours daily. Instead, there is a rotating schedule of open pharmacies. A listing of local pharmacies open outside of regular business hours can be found through several means, including a posting outside of every pharmacy titled "Farmacias del Guardia," newspaper listings, under the same title, or consulting your hotel concierge. There are no chains of pharmacies in Spain. Instead, each pharmacy is individually owned by a licensed pharmacist, and offers reliable services and medications. Many pharmacies will have English speaking staff, particularly those in tourist areas. Regardless of the pharmacy situation in any country, it is always advisable to bring enough medication to last through your trip. Be sure to carry it with you rather than trusting it to checked luggage (many frequent travelers bring a double supply of medication and pack each in different bags). It is also advisable to carry extra prescription sheets written by your doctor (with the generic names) in case you need refills during your trip and to show at customs as proof of the medication's identity and necessity. Always remember to check the expiration dates on all medications, whether they are from home or abroad. Depending on where you are traveling, you may also want to carry an anti-diarrheal medication and/or ask your physician for an appropriate anti-diarrheal prescription, as a precautionary measure.
