If your looking for speedy mail services then I suggest avoiding spains post offices although service has improved over the last few years they are still somewhat behind their European cousins. If desperation does get the better of you here are some helpful tips.Post Offices are normally open from 8.30 am to 2 pm (varies from town to town) and most are open Saturday morning. If you are collecting registered post be sure to take your passport or driving liscense as proof of I.D., you can also send money through a post office giro I do recommend asking for the express giro which is a little more but will only take 48hrs to send nationally whereas the standard giro can take up to 10 days.Queues are long and slow if your just popping in to get stamps I advise the estancos (tobbacconists) who sell stamps and can weigh.
Postal Rates
At year 2000 rates, a postcard or letter weighing up to 20g costs 70ptas from Andalucia to other European countries, 115ptas to North America and 185ptas to Australasia. An aerogram costs 85ptas to anywhere in the world.
Registered mail
(certificado) costs an extra 175ptas for International mail. Urgente service, which means your mail may arrive two or three days quicker, costs around an extra 270ptas for International mail.
Sending Mail
Stamps are sold at most estancos (tobacconist shops with 'Tabacos' in yellow letters on a maroon background), as well as at all post offices (oficinas de correos). Main post offices in cities and towns are usually open from about 8.30am to 8.30pm Monday to Friday, from about 9am to 1.30pm on Saturday. Estancos are usually open for normal Spanish shop hours.
It`s quite safe and reliable to post mail in the yellow street boxes (buzones) as well as post offices. Delivery times can be quite erratic, but ordinarily mail to other Western European countries normally arrives within a week; to North America within 10 days; to Australia or New Zealand within two weeks.
Receiving Mail
Delivery times are similar to those for outbound mail (see above). Poste restante mail can be addressed to you at poste restante (or better, lista de correos, the Spanish name for it), anywhere in Spain that has a post office. It will be delivered to the places main post office unless another one is specified in the address. Be sure to take your passport when you go to pick up your mail.
American Express card or travellers cheque holders can use the free client mail-holding service at American Express offices in Andalucia. You can obtain a list of these from American Express. Take your passport when you go to pick up mail.
