Awareness campaigns are stepped up and the paper and cardboard collection service is to be extended to hotels in Mijas and Fuengirola

Approximately 17,000 tons of solid residues was recycled on the Costa del Sol in 2007, said the Association of Municipalities last week. In the case of light containers, there was a 20.4 per cent increase in collection, the total weight collected being 3,500 tons. The average amount collected per inhabitant was 8.15 kilos in the year. With respect to paper and cardboard, the increase for the year was 68.24 per cent, which amounted to 6,500 tons, with an average of 16.54 kilos per inhabitant for the year. Door to door collections of paper and cardboard result in a total figure of 1,500 tons, which was an increase of 19 per cent on the previous year. As far as glass collection was concerned, the increase was 45 per cent, amounting to more than 6,000 tons.

These amounts fall short of the desired figures, and the Association of Municipalities is spending 200,000 euros on a number of recycling awareness campaigns. The paper and cardboard collection service is also being extended to hotels in Fuengirola and Mijas. A new garbage collection centre is being built in Mijas, while the Association plans to continue with its Ecomóvil collection service, available free in all municipalities.
