The sign pointing the way to the cafe in the Torre Almenara secondary school in La Cala de Mijas is written in eight different languages. Of the 346 pupils at this school only 30 per cent are Spanish and one can find children of 37 different nationalities studying together - British, French, German, Cuban, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Israeli - the list goes on.
To help get round language problems some of the teachers have signed up at the Official School of Languages to improve their English or to study another language. However language barriers cannot always be overcome. “The biggest problem is with the British pupils who make up 50 per cent of the foreigners and whose parents have hardly any interest in integrating in the community”, said Mario Galdeano, the head teacher. But the big advantage for the children is learning from their classmates about different cultures and religions, and team work. As ESO pupil Javier said: “I help them with Spanish and they help me with English which I’m not very good at.”
