Sewage, planning and safety are main concerns for foreigners
Friday, 01 February, 2008.

The completion of the Costa del Sol integral sewage treatment programme; simpler procedures for applying for planning permission and the re-establishment of legal safeguards in this field; plus an increase in police presence, are the main demands the area’s foreign population would like to put to the main political parties in the light of the coming general election. The president of the Federation of Associations of Foreign Residents on the Costa del Sol (Faecosol), Ricardo Bocanegra, explains that these are the primary concerns among the foreign community and plans to pass on these opinions to the politicians.

According to Bocanegra the foreign residents’ main complaint about the Costa del Sol is the treatment of sewage and the quality of bathing water, a situation that find “both surprising and unpleasant”, especially since the construction of infrastructure to solve the problem started 40 years ago and is still not complete.

The foreign community would also like to see an easier and faster process of applying for planning permission and an end to the current legal ambiguity caused by the situation in Marbella. Bocanegra explains that investment in residential tourism on the western Costa del Sol is slumping. The factors influencing this fall are, according to Bocanegra, the economic “recession” and the “alarming news” about the possible demolition of property, for example part of Antonio Banderas’s house in Marbella, and the fact that the town’s new development plan (PGOU) has not yet been approved.
