Burns Night events are always popular on the coast and this year was no exception. The Anglican Chaplaincy of St Andrew celebrated the birthday of Scotland’s renowned poet and favourite son, Robert Burns, in fine style. The haggis was piped in by Leslie Thompson (bottom right) and the address to the haggis was spoken by Billy Dawson. The British Consul, Bruce McIntyre, proposed a toast to the ‘lassies,’ and Ann Bowles made the reply. Entertainment included singing from the diners and more piping from Leslie Thompson. Over 2,000 euros were raised for chaplaincy funds.
The Nerja Scottish Country Dancers invited musician Patrick Wright (above left) - who is thought to be the only professional bagpipe player on the coast - to provide the musical entertainment at their own fun-packed Burns Night celebration.
At the Tamisa Golf Hotel in Mijas, events were scheduled for both the official Burns Day celebration date (January 25th) as well as the following day. Over 250 diners enjoyed traditional haggis, neeps, Aberdeen Angus Beef, and of course, plenty of whiskey. This year the haggis was piped in by 17-year-old Rachel Webster (above right, right) of the Newtongrange Pipe Band who flew over from Edinburgh with her father especially for the occasion. Resident Scot Dee McCath (above right, left) made the address to the haggis and the Celtic Dancers gave a fine performance.
