Sniffer dogs discovered poisoned bait in several locations
The culprits could face up to two years in prison if caught

Last week was a tragic one for some owners who walk their pets in the El Hornillo area of Mijas as several dogs were found to have died of poisoning. After the alarm was raised trained sniffer dogs were sent into the area to investigate, accompanied by officers from Seprona (the Guardia Civil Environment section). The specialists discovered that poisoned bait (chicken remains, allegedly soaked in a toxic substance) had been left in several locations. An investigation was immediately opened in an attempt to discover who had planted the poison.
Campaign
Meanwhile the local Environment Department has launched a public awareness campaign, distributing leaflets to warn that leaving poisoned bait in the countryside can endanger not just the lives of domestic and wild animals but also human beings, especially any children who might come across the toxic substances. The leaflets also point out that leaving poisoned bait is a criminal offence and could carry a prison sentence of up to two years and a fine of up to 300,000 euros. The Town Hall has called for residents to keep an eye out and report any information they might have.
