Attempts to negotiate the relocation of the 16 kiosks as part of the Marbella port facelift scheme have fallen through

The Town Hall’s project to revitalise Marbella harbour has come across an obstacle that could put the scheme significantly behind schedule. Attempts to negotiate the relocation of the 16 kiosks that occupy the upper terrace of the port area have failed and the local authority now plans to take legal action to evict the owners and clear the area. Alicia Jiménez, the councillor responsible for Commerce and the Public Highway, pointed out that their case will be based on the fact that the majority of the stallholders’ contracts have expired.
The 1.5 million euro port project involves the removal of the visual barrier created by the kiosks, as well as improvements to cleaning, lighting, public gardens, painting, signposting and drainage.
The local authority had initially envisaged finding a new location for these traders. Smaller kiosks in the style of old beach huts in the port’s parking area was the proposed alternative. This idea was rejected by the traders who want to remain on the seafront with wooden kiosks covering the same surface area as the existing ones.
Meanwhile the Town Hall continues to look for resources to fund the 1.5 million euro scheme. Applications for subsidies have been sent to different authorities, including the European Union.
