The municipal branch of Izquierda Unida (IU) continues to campaign on environmental issues, this time calling for improvements to the Marbella lake known as the Lago de las Tortugas. They complain that the area has been neglected by the local authority. According to the group’s spokesperson and sole town councillor, Enrique Monterroso, pollution in this area, which should be a green lung of great ecological value, had reached “intolerable”levels.
He accused the Mayor of failing to stick to the agreement reached by the town council to draw up a project for improvements to the lake and reserve part of the municipal budget to pay for the scheme.
While the first steps are being taken to have the area converted into a natural park, Monterroso has called for the Town Hall to carry out urgent clean-up work in the zone and weekly maintenance sessions “just as they did when IU was in charge of Nueva Andalucía during the time of the interim committee.
Izquierda Unida has also reminded the local authority of other measures included in the motion passed regarding the Lago de las Tortugas. Among them were the applications to the Andalusian Water Agency for safety plans for the muncipality’s reservoirs, and to the Junta de de Andalucía for the level of protection of the Lago de las Tortugas to be stepped up.
