Oenological antiques, or everything you wanted to know about old wine-related things

There are a surprising number of different items associated with wine, dating back to Roman times and beyond no doubt. Perhaps you could start with a bottle at the end of a sherry wine barrel, visit a bodega or the wine museum, with all its intrinsically beautiful industrial paraphernalia. Then you could envisage an elderly relative in front of a cut-glass decanter, the wine glasses and grapes of a still-life painting, or a Georgian scene of frock-coated gentlemen pulling bottles out of a mahogany wine cooler. Then there were the delicately curled, fluted and embellished wine jugs used by the ‘Ancients’ at their orgies ... and in modern times, corkscrews, coasters, funnels ... enough to prove that this subject deals with more than meets the memory.
Lectures
On Monday, 10th March, at 4.30 p.m. at the Salon Varietes Theatre, Fuengirola, speaker, John Ericson, will lead us along this fascinating path, showing once again, that if it’s not fun, it’s not Nadfas. This lecture entitled ‘Wine related Antiques’ will also be given in Nerja, at the Casa Cultural, Calle Granada, but on Tuesday, 11th March at 6 p.m.
The Illustrated Talk, also on Tuesday 11th, in Mijas, given by Hugh Gibbons, M.A., and called: ‘Art, Tricks and Deception’, will take place at 10.30 a.m. at the Town Hall. This will deal with not only with trompe l’oeil in art and architecture, illusions created by pavement and TV artists, camouflage or the amazing effects of Vassarely pictures, but also the ultimate counter action to deception, that expert eye in the detection of fraud.
