New project gets off to a great start

The Mijas Town Hall Foreigners Department was recently contacted by the Virgen de la Peña primary school in Las Lagunas who wanted to help the pupils improve their English. A pilot programme called ‘I Speak English’ was launched and the response was overwhelming; over sixty foreign residents put their names down to participate. Two groups go to the school twice a week and two children are assigned to each volunteer, so the classes are very intense. Ana Skou and Marta Rey from the Foreigners Department, who are coordinating the programme, said that due to its success the programme may be offered to the rest of the schools in the municipality. Most of the volunteers are retired teachers or ex education professionals but anyone can become a volunteer as long as they have a good command of English.
