Residents of the La Cañada area demand a sound barrier
Friday, 29 February, 2008.

José Antonio García

They claim that the constant noise of the traffic is making their lives impossible, and that their children suffer most

Residents of Hacienda Cortés, near La Cañada, are growing tired of the constant noise from the traffic on the highway beside them, claiming that it is affecting their nerves and causing them sleeplessness and other health problems. Now they have decided to take action, and have demanded that large sound barriers be built, along with a false tunnel, as a means of recuperating some tranquillity in their lives. Many thousands of cars and lorries use this road every day. “The situation is unacceptable,” says óscar Gutiérrez, one of the residents affected. “We all need to work together to find a solution.” Many other residents have also called for meetings to be held and letters to be sent to the relevant authorities. Up to now, complaints have been made on an individual basis.

Antonio Guerrero is the president of the Hacienda Cortés residential development, whose resident’s association, Vecinos Arroyo II, has members from the Camino de los Pescadores and the northern part of Marbella. “Nobody has been in contact with us yet, but we are, nevertheless, well aware of the noise problems suffered by the residents of this area. We also know there is no short-term solution to the problem,” he says. He also mentions the fact that the tranquillity enjoyed by the residents of the area before the motorway was built is now no more than a distant memory.

“Nobody seems to be doing anything about the problem,” says another resident of the area who prefers to remain anonymous. He points to the area most affected by the noise, which is a section of roadway where the bus garage is located, close to the Guadalpín River viaduct. “The noise here reverberates, which makes it all the worse,” he says. The children, he adds, are the ones who suffer most. “While nothing has been done here, they built a false tunnel in La Quinta so that people can play golf,” says this disillusioned resident.
