New season set to begin at the Mijas racecourse
Friday, 22 February, 2008.

Francisco Jiménez

Last week details of the new horse racing season at the Hipódromo Costa del Sol, which starts this Sunday (February 24th) were announced by Jesualdo Mira, Technical Director of the racecourse, Pedro Fernández, Mijas Deputy Mayor, and Frank Mani, President of Carrera Entertainment - the company which manages the facilities.

Highlights of the winter season include the Mijas Cup on Andalucía Day (Thursday 28th February) and the Jockey Championship on March 16th. There is a total of 400,000 euros in prize money up for grabs in the 30 races scheduled to take place. The other race dates not already mentioned are March 2nd, 9th, and 23rd and racing will start at 10.45 a.m. each day. Admission to the course costs five euros but for children and over 65s it is free. For fans who cannot get along to Mijas, all of the season’s races will be shown Spanish TV’s TVE2.

Viability plan

The three men also spoke about their confidence that the recent financial problems at the race course would be overcome. The Deputy Mayor said that Town Hall was working on a viability plan for the Hipódromo and that Carrera Entertainment would keep the management concession. At the same time Frank Mani said that the employees would be paid what was owed to them in around ten days time.
