Jorge Kohn has created magnificent works of art in the sands of the Caribbean and the Canary Islands, and now works in Marbella.
How long have you been sculpting in the sand?
For eleven years, and I’ve been working in Marbella since last August.
Where did you learn to make sand castles like these?
I learned the craft on my own. I was trekking with friends in Tenerife and didn’t have much money, so I began to make castles in the sand. I had no option, because I spoke no Spanish and couldn’t get a job. I also learned that my work looks better at night, when illuminated with candles.
What inspires you to work these shapes in the sand?
I always begin a new work without any definitive design in mind. I have an overall idea of what I want, and how to go about achieving it, but I just work out the actual design as I go along.
How long do these sculptures last before falling down?
It all depends on the weather. At this time of year, with the damp air, they last longer. it is also quieter now than in the summer, and I have more time to re-touch the works, and can do that for about a month or more before they fall apart. The heat of the summer dries them out quicker, so they do not last as long.
Are the people of Marbella generous at recognising them as works of art?
Yes, they do generally see them as works of art, and respond accordingly.
Can you make a living from what you do?
It all depends. There are some artists who work very fast to earn money, but what I do is an art form that people are grateful for. I do not enjoy many luxuries, but I live well enough.
Do the sculptures need much work on them once finished?
Just some re-touching, and I keep them damp with sea water, which creates a fine layer of salt on the outside that makes them more resilient.
