The population of the Axarquía has grown by 33 per cent in the last ten years, more than ten per cent more than the provincial average. The district now has over 190,000 inhabitants according to January 2008 figures.
The population density in the Axarquía is 186.5 inhabitants per square kilometre, well below the provincial average of 204.
Costa del Sol
Meanwhile the population in Benalmádena, Fuengirola and Mijas is growing much faster than the national average, becoming one of the most overcrowded areas of Andalucía, according to a report released by the Andalusian Statistics Institute. The three municipalities alone account for 24.47 per cent of the province’s total population. The report “Andalusian Municipalities. Basic figures 2008” reveals that the majority of Costa del Sol residents were born outside the province, and many of them have come from outside Spain. In fact one in ten of the foreigners resident in Andalucía is registered in Fuengirola, Mijas or Benalmádena, not counting all those who have not joined the population census.
The average age in these three coastal municipalities is higher than in other areas due to the large number of foreigners retiring to the area.
