Estepona Town Hall continues to take measures to deal with the debt of as much as 95 million euros it has run up with government institutions and private suppliers. At last Monday’s council meeting it was agreed to honour out of court settlements regarding debts of 2.7 million euros to private suppliers. Of this sum some 2.5 million euros are owed to a law firm for legal services provided in 1995; and another 200,000 euros are owed to the firm BP for fuel for the fleet of municipal vehicles.

Councillor Francisco Zamorano explained that the local authority had previously ignored bills sent out by the law firm and the matter had been taken to the Andalusian High Court. This had resulted in a sentence giving the Town Hall three months to settle this debt and the interest accrued. Nevertheless an agreed has been reached with the firm whereby the local authority will pay off the debt over the next six years.

The second settlement concerns the debt to BP, which will be paid off over 60 days as agreed with the creditor. The PP and PES opposition groups voted against the motions, criticising the Socialist group running the Town Hall for including the debt motions in the urgent affairs section instead of in the general order of the day.
