The beaches are, naturally, one of the principal tourism attractions of Nerja, and when summer comes around, most visitors to the area like to spend their days enjoying them. When night falls, the same beaches tend to empty, but now the Nerja Town Hall plans to do something about that. The idea is to illuminate the three main beaches in the locality, which are the Burriana, the Calahonda and the El Salón, thereby encouraging people to use them by night as well as day. Sporting activities will be organised for young people, as an alternative to the infamous botellón, the late-night drinking sessions in the streets.
The idea is not new, we are told by the Delegate for Sport in the Town Hall, Andrés Márquez (PP), who said that the beach at La Torrecilla was illuminated some years ago, but the lights were vandalised shortly afterwards.
