Fortes The number of visitors to the International Fair was 40 per cent higher than in 2007 This year's International Fair was a resounding success by all accounts. José Sánchez, the councillor for tourism, revealed that three hundred thousand more people visited the fair than in 2007. The fact that the event coincided with the May 1st public holiday seems to have had an effect on the number of visitors, said Sánchez. Other events and activities which were put on simultaneously, such as the FIDEM trades fair, also attracted a considerable number of visits - some 50,000 over the long weekend to be exact. Sánchez also praised the wide range and quality of products and activities put on by the various delegations, as well as the selection of traditional arts and crafts products and food. Apart from the great number of visitors, one of the highlights of this year's fair was the representation of Israel and Palestine. Sur In English http://www.puertobanusguide.com/news0_13955.php Mercedes Periáñez A team of five plan to kite surf across the Gibraltar Strait to raise funds for cancer charities Graham Pagden lost his sister to cancer two years ago and now he wants to do something to show his appreciation for all the support she received from different associations during her illness. This young Estepona resident has come up with an original way of raising funds for the fight against cancer. He and four friends plan to kite surf across the Strait of Gibraltar. “We see this as a way of giving something back to the people who helped Ushi so much when she most needed it”, said Pagden. Support has not been slow in arriving for this unusual challenge. “People are more and more aware of the problem. Statistics show that one in three of us will have some sort of cancer. Knowing what this illness is like - it can go on for a long time - the care given by these associations is very important”, he adds. The event is initially planned to take place on June 18th, although this will depend on the weather conditions. The group of kite surfers will set off from Los Lances beach in Tarifa, crossing the Strait to land on a beach on the Moroccan coastline. The feat is expected to take between 45 minutes and an hour and a half. The organisers have also planned a programme of activities to take place on the Tarifa beach to encourage the general public to go along and support the kite surfers and make their donations. Graham claims that their fund-raising adventure is perfectly safe. The Gibraltar Strait is an extremely busy, even congested, stretch of sea. The team will be accompanied by two Red Cross support vessels just in case the wind halts their progress. “We might see whales and even sharks, but there’s no danger”, says Pagden, who has been kite surfing for six years now. This is the first fund-raising crossing the group has organised but they are not short of new projects to continue to help the different cancer charities. “If this crossing is successful we’ll do it again, or even turn it into a regular event”, explains the young organiser. All of the funds raised by the kite surfers will go direct to their chosen cancer charities: Cudeca Cancer Care, the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC) and the McMillan Cancer Society. Her real name is Xiaoling and she is a member of the Chinese Cultural School of Malaga, one of the 20 groups that took part in the 14th annual Foreign Residents’ International Day held last Saturday. The event began with a colourful street parade which was rather like a fashion show of international costumes. It was soon after 11 o’clock when the municipal band, at the head of the parade, made its way into the Plaza de la Nogalera which was already bathed in bright sunshine, a world of difference from the previous week’s wet weather that caused the event to be postponed. It was still early but on the stand manned by the Argentinian Association Miguel already had the traditional barbecue going, ready to be piled high with chorizo, entrails and ribs served with the famous “chimichurri” sauce made with Argentinian spices, the secret to any grill, according to Sergio Pellereti. Meanwhile on the Philippines stand Violeta, resident in Torremolinos for 18 years, tempted visitors with spring rolls and noodles. However the international representatives had more to offer than calories. The Ecuadorians were determined to demonstrate the quality of the Panama Hat, the genuine Ecuadorian hat “despite being called Panama”. Nearby the music was provided by Quique Pérez, a Peruvian who arrived in Torremolinos seven years ago “in search of better life”. The mixture of languages and cultures brought together in the Plaza de la Nogalera on Saturday was no more than a reflection of everyday life in Torremolinos, where some 130 nationalities live side by side. “There’s a place for everyone here, irrespective of race, culture or language”, points out María Núñez, who was born and raised in La Carihuela and went along to enjoy the day’s entertainment provided by her colourful neighbours. Multicultural town After a tour of all the stands set up in the square, the local mayor, Pedro Fernández Montes, addressed the crowds. “Ever since Torremolinos was one of the first tourist destinations some 50 years ago, visitors have been deciding to make the town their home”, he said, adding that this had made Torremolinos “one of the most multicultural and multinational towns in the world”. But that’s not all: the town’s international nature is all the more significant bearing in mind that “the vast majority of the residents live together in harmony and are perfectly integrated”. The festivities commenced at eleven o’clock on the dot when Emma Hall, the Residents’ Councillor, cut the tape assisted by the Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo. With more than 50 stands, this year’s Residents’ Day had something for everyone with an important representation of clubs, associations, charities and businesses from the Axarquía area. The SUR in English Nerja Office also had a stand and staff were on hand to meet and talk to readers and advertisers who popped by to pick up a copy of the newspaper. The stands were open from 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. and the bar and stage area, which opened at the same time, continued with the celebrations until 7 p.m. On stage the thousands of spectators were treated to a fantastic selection of live music (classical and modern); dance exhibitions (Nerja Theatre Workshop, Casa Argentina, Nerja Pensioners’ Home and Juani and Elena’s Spanish Dance Academy) and a fencing demonstration. This year the Residents’ Day returned to the centre of Nerja, the Paseo Nuevo (the new space created above the municipal car park, behind the Town Hall) after four years in the Verano Azul Park. The new location was a huge success and the date, slightly later than in other years, was appreciated as the weather was perfect for such an important open-air event.
