SUN BURN
We all know overexposure to the sun causes sunburn and skin cancer. Still we rush from our cold climates, take ourselves out under the intense meditteranean sun and come home looking like a nuclear blast victim. Prevention is better than a cure. Use sunscreen Treatment.
Noted for its healing properties since ancient times, references to Aloe can be found in the Bible as well as the Vedic scriptures of India. Aloe vera is used externally for minor burns such as sunburn, for scrapes, and other skin irritations. It soothes and tones the skin, and speeds healing. It's grows everywhere here in Andalucia nip off leaves from the top they have the best healing properties.
Modern Medicine
Pain relievers like Tylenol or Ibufren(Not Asprin)will help alleviate some of the pain associated with sun burns. Applying Vitamin E oil directly to your skin will help burns heal faster. Cortisone cream applied several times a day (especially on the first day) may reduce swelling.
The Old Way
Another therapy that has been used for burns, as well as infected wounds, for thousands of years is human urine, or its derivative, urea. I haven't tried this myself on burns yet, but apparently one applies urine or urea-soaked compresses to the affected area, keeping them wet with fresh applications of urine. Though urea is said to sting a bit, straight urine supposedly does not unless it has a high alcohol content from the night before..
DEHYDRATION
Symtoms
Dehydration is the loss of water and body salts through sunstroke and diarrhoea. Early features are difficult to detect but include dryness of mouth and thirst. The signs of dehydration include: sunken fontanelle (in infants); fast, weak pulse; breathing faster than normal; loss of skin elasticity; sunken, dry eyes and reduced amount of urine.
Cure
Rehydrate
1 Litre of Clean Water(Un litro de aqua)
3.5 gms. of Salt(Sal)
3 gms. of Bicarbonate of Soda(Bicarbato)
20 gms of Glucose(Glucosa)
Local Police
There are three separate police organisations in Andalucia which can be confusing at first. The Guardia Civil wear green uniforms and are less reactionary today than they were during Franco's control. They are responsible for national security, customs and for crowd control at large events. Their trafico department patrol the main highways with cars and motorbikes and organise radar speeding checks.
The National Police normally wear a black uniform and white shirts. Others will wear a blue military style uniform and can be heavily armed as their duties include guarding public buildings, the Royal Family and Government figures. They deal with most crime investigation which is important to know if you are unfortunate enough to be the victim of some crime, such as a bag snatching. If this is the case, you should make a statement (denuncia) at a police station. They will issue you a copy for your insurance company (and banks if your credit card is taken and misused) .
The Municipal Police are essentially local police and wear blue and white uniforms. They are responsible to the mayor and town hall in each municipality, and devote much time to local traffic control and parking violations. As ambasadors for thier town they are most likely to help tourists. All three branches of the police are armed and should be treated with due respect. There are frequent traffic checks during the summer months, particularly on the Costa del Sol and you should always carry some form of identification with you plus, if you are driving, your driving licence and valid car insurance.
