- Positive Mind
[ Back ]

During my 12 years as a PGA Pro I have attended seminars regarding the golfing mind and also seen top sports psychologists during my playing days. It is a very important part of golf to help you get through 18 holes successfully. I do believe however that a sound repetitive technique is first and foremost and then a good mind can help a good swing repeat. After both myself and my student are happy with the way they are swinging on the range, I then take them to the course for a playing lesson to work on course management and positive thinking among other things. I believe the three most important things for getting the mind right on the course is 1) A good pre-shot routine that repeats (if you can repeat something before the swing with a nice rhythm then the swing has more chance to repeat with the same rhythm). 2) Putting a trigger in the routine that makes you remember all you best achievements (gets the mind thinking positive and lifts you, its hard to think of negative thoughts with this) and 3) Getting your body language right between shots (gives you the ability to forget bad shots as its impossible to feel bad if you walk tall and smile, remember a bad shot gives us the opportunity to play a good shot straight after).
These 3 things are easier said than done but there are practice routines you can do to help achieve them easier when your playing. There is a lot more to sports psychology than this but this is a good starting point and can your mind really take on any more than this with all the other things you have to think of, on the course? I don't think so! For more information contact PGA Pro Nick Moncur on 0034 626239433 or email info@moncurgolfacademy.com web www.moncurgolfacademy.com
